According to the Folkestone Herald, 6th March 1915, Alfred had joined the army c1908 and spent most of his time in India, only being transferred to France in January 1915. He was private, 8562, in the 2nd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment when he was killed in France, 23rd April 1915, aged 34. He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial and he is also commemorated on Folkestone War Memorial.
Alfred John Austin was born (December) 1880 in the Elham District to Mary and John Austin, a bricklayer. He was the eldest of four children, Edith, Florence and Ada were his siblings. The 1881 census show the family living at 22 Pavilion Road, Folkestone but by 1891 they have moved to 8 Darlington Place, Folkestone. Alfred went to school at Christchurch School and became a bricklayer on leaving (1901 census).
