Alfred Rolfe
Alfred was a Rifleman in the 12th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps and was killed on 20th September 1917. The report in the Folkestone Herald 13th October 1917 states “Rifleman A.Rolfe, Kings Royal Rifle, has been killed in action. He was the son on Mrs Rolfe, of 26 Ingles Lane and was formerly an apprentice machinist at the works of the “Folkestone Herald”. This is the second son Mrs Rolfe has lost during the war.” He was about 24 years old. He is buried at Cement House Cemetery, Belgium.
Alfred was born (March) 1894 in the Brighton District of Sussex to Mary and William Rolf, a bricklayer. By 1901 the family, his mother Mary, a widow, James, Emily, Alfred and Charlie lived in 3 rooms at 11 Invicta Road, Folkestone. William probably died (December) 1899 E.Preston District. Alfred is educated at Christchurch School. The family moved to 16 Allendale Street, and then to Darlington St. Folkestone. Alfred’s brother Charles is also on Christchurch War Memorial. They also had another brother Lionel who was killed in action on 30th June 1916 in France.
