Charles joined up in September 1914 and was made a private(T/2451) 1st/5th Battalion,” The Buffs”, the East Kent Regiment. He served in the Kut Relief Expedition, dieing on the 28th April 1916 in Mesopotamia aged 27. He is buried with honour in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq. He is also commemorated on Folkestone War Memorial, Oddfellow Memorial (Pride of Cliff Lodge) Folkestone and Grace Hill School War Memorial and the family grave in Cheriton Road Cemetery, Folkestone.
Charles Henry Rumney was born (March) 1887 in the Elham District of Kent, to Charlotte and George W.Rumney, an upholsterer. The family lived at 6 Darby Place, Folkestone in 1891 moving to 28 Darby Road Folkestone by 1901. The Family consisted of Clarissa, George, Matilda, Charles and Annie. Charles was educated at the Wesleyan School (Grace Hill) Folkestone. He then went onto be a shop boy (1901 census) and then an upholsterer (1911 census).
