Clive Griffin
An Army list April 1915, shows the Royal Field Artillery Territorial Force- 1st Kent Battery, Drill Hall, Liverpool St, Dover ,being commanded by 2nd Lieutenant C.Griffin, (28th October 1914). He later became a Lieutenant, 3rd Home Counties Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He probably left England with his unit late 1915. Clive received a Military Cross (gazetted 14th January 1916) and Bar (gazetted 10th January 1917). The citation for the bar states he “showed great bravery and coolness as section Commander. When seriously wounded under heavy shell fire he refused to be attended to at the dressing station until all the men there had been dressed.” He was also twice mentioned in despatches. He died on 11th November 1916 from wounds received at the battle of Bala (Struma Valley) on 1St October 1916. He was 23 years old. His buried at Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery. He is commemorated on Folkestone War Memorial and his parent’s gravestone, Cheriton Road Cemetery, Folkestone.
Clive Griffin was born in Folkestone in 1893 to Emily and William Griffin who was general manager and secretary to Folkestone Gas and Coke Company. The family lived at 44 Radnor Park Road, Folkestone moved to Ivydene, Julian Road and then to St.Hilda’s, Earls Avenue, Folkestone. Clive had an older sister Grace. He was educated at Tonbridge School, Tonbridge, Kent.
