Sapper Frederick Charles Down, 143343, 126th Field Company, Royal Engineers died 17th November 1918, aged 22, as a prisoner of war in hospital in Germany. He joined the Royal Engineers on 23rd November 1915 and served in France before being taken prisoner. He is buried in Niederzwehren cemetery, near Kassel, Germany is also commemorated on Folkestone War Memorial.
Frederick Down was born (September) 1896 in the Elham District to Maria and Charles W.Down, a carpenter and joiner. He had one younger brother Donald Percy Down. The family lived at 56 Grove Road (1901 and 1911 census) until about 1916 when they moved to 25 St. Michael’s Street, Folkestone. The 1911 census gives Frederick’s occupation as apprentice carpenter and joiner.
