Frederick joined the army n 19th June 1916 and became a pioneer (182252) with the 38th Motor Air Line Service, Royal Engineers. He died from bronchial pneumonia whilst out in Salonika, on 30th November 1918, aged 38. He is buried at Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. The Folkestone Herald 4th December 1918 stated” The deceased, who joined un in the early part of 1916, served all though the Salonika campaign and traversed some of the Bulgarian mountains, where he lost his kit. He was an old boy of the Harvey Grammar School, and will be remembered as a fine cricketer. At the time of joining the colours he was employed in a large house of business at Eton. He leaves a widow and one child.” He is commemorated on the Harvey Grammar School Roll of Honour and Folkestone War Memorial.
Frederick Henry Plaistow was born (December) 1880 in the Elham District to Mary Alice and Frederick William Plaistow, a tailor. The 1881 census shows the family living at 2 Darby Place, Folkestone and Frederick 4 months old. By the next census (1891) the family have moved to 14 Coolinge Road and Frederick has two younger siblings Arthur and Mary. Frederick was educated at The Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone and then went onto become a tailors cutter (1901 census). He leaves the family home and lives at 25 Grove Road, Windsor Berks, aged 30, tailors cutter in the 1911 census. In the next year (September) 1912 he married Nora V Wilson in the Kingston district of London. His surname is usually spelt Plaistowe on most official documents.
