Harold joined the army in March 1914 and became trooper (3290) in the First Middlesex Hussars. He Served in Egypt and Salonika where he died of malaria on active service, 26th October 1916, aged 23. He was interred at the Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece. He is commemorated on Folkestone War Memorial, the Harvey Grammar School Roll of Honour, Folkestone, the family grave, Cheriton Road Cemetery, Folkestone and St. Luke’s Church, Redcliffe Gardens, Chelsea.
Harold Fowler was born (December) 1892 in the Elham District to Ellen and Edwin Bart Fowler, a builder. The family lived at 52 Radnor Park Road, Folkestone and included Ellen, Emily, Lilian, Herbert, Minnie, Leopold, Harold and Gladys. Harold was educated at the Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone and then went on to St. Mark’s College, King’s Road, Chelsea (a teacher training college). He enlisted for the army in Chelsea.
