John Court enlisted into the 5th Battalion, The East Kent Regiment in August 1914. He was sent overseas 1st December 1915 and served in both India and Mesopotamia. He was killed 7th January 1916 aged 19, and is remembered on the Basra Memorial, Iraq and on the Folkestone War Memorial.
John was born (September) 1896 in the Elham District to Mary and Henry Court. His father was a teacher of gymnastics. The 1901 census shows the family John and his older brothers and sisters, Alice, Henry, Charles and Vera, living at 28 Bouverie Square, Folkestone. Later they moved to Argyle House,4 Manor Road, Folkestone next door to the Streatfeild family. John was at school at Kent College in Bridge near Canterbury, when the 1911 census was taken.
