John Wilson Thurlow
John enlisted into the army, under age, and into the local regiment, the 4th Battalion East Kent Regiment. He was transferred into the 1st/19th Battalion London Regiment (613119). He served in France and Flanders being killed in action 29th September 1916 aged 17. He is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial. He is also commemorated on Folkestone War Memorial.
John Wilson Thurlow was born (June) 1899 in the Elham District to Margaret and Henry Thurlow, a house painter. The family lived at 8 Alexandra Mews, Folkestone. John had 3 siblings, Henry, Emily and Nellie. Henry, john’s father died in 1910 aged 51 and the family moved next door to 9 Alexander Mews. He was educated at Christchurch School.
